How to play golf if you totally suck – and where to play it.

To some, golf is merely a reason to network and get away with the guys. To others, it’s a death trap of embarrassment. The following is our guide to simply getting by, because in a world of company golf days and men’s tournaments, one simply cannot afford to miss out on this socially thriving sport. We’ll also fill you in on the best driving ranges in Toronto, so you can practice your game before the big game. Let’s get started:

Lesson 1. The Grip.

Beginners normally use the “Ten finger grip” which has your right arm immediately below your left. However, if you are strong, you may want to try the “overlap grip” or “interlock grip” that the pros use. This helps your ball have maximum power in a straighter line.

Lesson 2. The Stance.
You’ll want to stay as equally balanced as possible. Relax and let your hips do the moving. Keep your spine erect and your knees slightly bent with your arms hanging naturally forward. The further your reach out the more likely your ball will run away.

Lesson 3. The Backswing.
Assuming you’ve been right-handed this whole time, you’ll want to keep that left arm straight. All the way as your pull back. Some say you should swing back as far as you can, but since you kind of suck, don’t. You may lose a bit of power in only pulling back a little bit (especially with driving) but this way you’re more likely to actually hit the ball and have it go straight. The further the club gets, the less control you have on its accuracy.

Lesson 4. The Downswing.
You are a grandfather clock. You swing in complete sync with your hips and arms. You keep your eyes on the stationary ball even after you’ve hit it. This is where most people screw up – because the natural instinct is to see where your ball goes. Well, if you do that the chances are it’s in the woods somewhere. Head must stay down at all times until you are completely finished your swing.

Lesson 5. The Follow-through.
Here’s where you can lift your head. As your arms come around your shoulders, you can follow the path of the ball. Keep everything on the same angle of the swing. If your momentum causes any twisting in your torso, the ball will obey and twist with you.

Now, let’s head to the driving range before your big game:
Our favourite is the one off Cherry st. by the Docks here. It’s also right next to a motorbike school but we’ll save that article for another time.
There’s also Inner Golf, Beach Fairway Golf Range, The Metro Golf Dome, or Copper Creek Golf Club.

Best of luck! And if all else fails, offer to grab everyone a round of beers to loosen them up.
