Yey or Neigh, should fighting be allowed in hockey?
We’ve been torn for quite some time on this debate – so torn that we didn’t even want to discuss it. But Olympic regulations clearly state that all fighting is forbidden during the games. This is presumably because most hockey leagues (besides the NHL) forbid it, punishing those who initiate fights with 5-minute penalties or an ejection from the game. Besides, could you really imagine the Canadian Women’s team winning tonight simply through cat-fights and bitch slaps? I think not.
And yet, there’s something to be said about a team’s momentum being changed completely based on the outcome of a few punches. It’s what makes this sport different to any other team sport, it’s what makes us Canadian – I guess. But where’s the line? At what point is it just stupid to recruit a player based on his punching ability instead of his scoring skills? Why can the men fight but never the women? Why even drop the gloves if you actually want to hurt someone? We’ll leave this one to you in the voting section because frankly, we’re up in the air.
