The best tobogganing hills in Toronto. And what to take with you while you’re there.

When life gives us lemons, we make lemonade. So why get all huffy and pout-y with all the beautiful snow around us? You loved snow as a kid, and you can – neigh, will love it now thanks to us. So let’s go tobogganing, pony style:

First, pick your hill:

Christie Pits/ Bickford Park (Bloor W. at Christie):
A little sketchy, but with a big group of friends, you’ll find three different styles of hills for your hard core sledding. The oddballs luring around you will only add to the thrill.

Sherwood Park (Blythwood at Mount Pleasant)
A great hill, with a sneaky advanced hill meandering through the woods. This one is perfect for late at night, and there are plenty of bars and coffee spots in the neighbourhood for later.

Withrow Park (Pape at Chester)
A steep and smooth hill but a little too short a ride for our Cowgirl extremists. Still, if you’re located nearest to this park it won’t disappoint.

Riverdale Park (Broadview at Danforth)
One of our favourites – a nice steep, smooth hill that will excite and delight you. It has an amazing view of downtown and guess what else? It’s next to Riverdale Farm where all the cute ponies are. Ponies + tobogganing = Best. Time. Ever.

Crestview Park (Finch at Don Mills)
Yes, yes it’s FINCH. But the best part about being on the edge of town is having the entire view of Toronto lying ahead of you. Perfect for night-sledding and playing in the school playgrounds nearby. What, don’t you still do that too?

High Park (Christie at Bickford)
Many hills to choose from here; with everything from beginner to advanced. Might be a little crowded though since half of Toronto has already picked up on this one.

Trinity Bellwoods Park (Queen W. at Bellwoods)
The hipster tobogganing hill of Toronto. If you intend on sledding avec your Ray Bans and Sorel boots, head here. This hill isn’t so much impressive to ride on, but as a social hot-spot, you’re in.

Winston Churchill Park (St. Clair W. at Bathurst)
Advanced riders only please. This park will bring the thrill you’re looking for if you’re trying to impress a hot date. Nothing says “come hither” like flying down a hill screaming like an old lady.

Next, pack your bag:

If you’re heading out during the day, you’ll need a box (yes, box) of Starbucks coffee with you. If you have a rope of some sort to tie as a “finish” line, bring that too. Bring prizes, candy, booze, whatever you need to refuel. If you’re heading out at night – dress up. Not hats-and-mittens dress up, we mean costumes. Costumes with capes attached that enhance your tobogganing speed. It’s all about improvisation, and getting as creative  as possible with the art of sledding.
