Brilliant Bright Lights
A review of last Thursday’s Lights concert at Kool Haus.

Lights is like the best friend you wish you had. The 22-year-old musician from Timmins, Ont. instantly won over the crowd at Kool Haus as she humbly beamed down at her fans after making her appearance on stage. Lights, also known as Valerie Poxleitner, performed tracks from her new album, The Listening, to a teenage-dominated crowd, many of whom sported her signature side-bang and headband look.

84.85. Music By Numbers.
Chatting with the newest, hottest electro-rap band in Toronto. Jealous much?

There’s a lot of mystique behind 84.85 – something members Jay Jolliffe and Colin Maciver are proud of. With no defined genre, or categorized venue, and with a name that easily confuses most people, it’s no wonder that this band is causing quite the stir. But we’ve decided to mix it up a bit, and ask Jay about this unique approach, as well as what his thoughts are on DJing in Toronto. Is it all just about the huge headphones and head-bobbing?

With 80′s funk music playing, dancers swinging from the ceiling, and oh yea, a sea of mustaches, The Movember party last night at the Guvernment was beyond amazing. It was all for a good cause though, as Canada ended up raising about $5.5 million for prostate cancer research. Awards were given, staches were praised, and drinks were had. Here are some photos from the night (our head cowgirl went as Charlie Chaplin), we hope you enjoy!

Got a thing for martinis? We do too. Paaeez on College St. make this unbelievable drink, the Raspberry Fizz, made with Champagne, lychee juice, and fresh raspberries. Sadly though, it’s $12 per glass and once you have one, well, the next thing you know your bank account’s empty. But now we’re going to let you in on a secret: you can recreate your favorite pricey drinks without breaking your bank account. Not only will we show you how, but we’ll also provide you with some amazing cocktail combos. (more…)
