Our Veterinarian knows best, here’s what you can get from having unprotected sex.

Why do the words ’sex’ and ‘disease’ have to be in the same sentence? What are all those nasty things that can jump on me when I’m having fun?  What does it mean when he says he’s been tested? Did she say she had a hairpiece or herpes? Best to find out – so here’s the low down:

What’s the most common STI?

HPV – otherwise known as genital warts. Not pretty. It can be treated with creams, liquid nitrogen, and (cue dr. Evil) lasers. It’s a significant cause of cervical cancer in women that can be prevented with Gardasil shots for those under 24. Unfortunately they are mucho expensive. Guess what else, guys generally don’t know they’re there and there is no test to find out. (80% of sexually active people have this thing.)

The Runner-up:

Herpes! Take your pick – 1 or 2. Genital infection found in 25% of Canada’s population. There’s no way to test it except when you have nasty blisters (at that point a culture can be done to confirm the diagnosis). But by then it’s too late! No cure. Your only hope is expensive oral medication to suppress the outbreaks. Anyone with genital herpes should be on these drugs before having sex with you.

Fantastic. So what CAN I get tested for?

Chlamydia and Gonorrhea can both be tested with a urine test (as well as swabs) and thankfully they are easily treated. The big problem is the lack of symptoms with an infection so keep getting tested on a regular basis. Blood tests can be done for HIV, Hepatitis B and Syphilis. These are more rare but that doesn’t mean they don’t exist.

Anything else nesting in down there I should know about?

Hell yes – crabs and lice (they itch), molluscum warts, yeast, trichomonas, and bacterial vaginosis.

Sex sure is appealing, isn’t it? It’s about as appealing as abstinence. Here’s the happy medium: use a freaking condom! Get tested or pick up free condoms here.
